Iceland Symphony: Rhapsody in Blue

Reykjavik

Thursday 12 May
Reykjavik Harpa - Concert Hall and Conference Centre Austurbakki 2

The programme features some of the most enduring works by America's premier composers. The overture to Leonard Bernstein's operetta Candidegarnered rave reviews immediately upon its premiere in 1956 and has been extremely popular ever since. George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Aaron Copland's Appalachian Spring are iconic twentieth-century American works, and Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings is one of the most beautiful American works from that period. American music specialists JoAnn Falletta and Orion Weiss have received high praise for their collaboration, including their recording of Gershwin's orchestra music for Naxos. Falletta is Chief Conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra, and pianist Orion Weiss has appeared with many major orchestras in the United States.
