Description
Depart from Reykjavik aboard a Mountain Taxi Super Jeep to explore lava fields, volcanic craters, glacial waterfalls, and geothermal hot springs. The tour begins with a drive through fertile farmland, followed by views of Hekla, Iceland’s most famous active volcano. Hekla last erupted in 2000 and has about 20 recorded eruptions since the 9th century settlement.
The contrasting landscapes showcase lava and vegetation shaped by erosion. You will drive to the edge of the youngest lava field formed during Hekla’s 2000 eruption. Weather permitting, the route includes a drive along the volcano’s ridge at nearly 900 meters above sea level, offering expansive views.
Next, travel through rugged mountain terrain past more lava fields and craters before visiting the Ljótipollur crater. Enjoy a coffee and lunch break in Landmannalaugar, with the option for a 1 to 2-hour hike through the lava fields or a soak in natural geothermal pools.
The tour concludes with a drive through Þjórsárdalur to admire Hjálparfoss Waterfall and its cascades before returning to Reykjavik.
