Chromo Sapiens Art Installation in Reykjavík
Chromo Sapiens is a multi-sensory art installation by Icelandic artist Shoplifter, located at Höfuðstöðin in Reykjavík. It suits visitors interested in immersive contemporary art experiences.
Description
Created by Hrafnhildur Arnardóttir (Shoplifter), Chromo Sapiens debuted at the Icelandic Pavilion during the 2019 Venice Biennale. The installation features three caves constructed from synthetic hair extensions, a signature material of the artist. Each cave includes soundscapes by the Icelandic band HAM, surrounding visitors with a full sensory experience.
Visitors enter as homo sapiens and explore inner landscapes through stimulation of color, texture, and sound, exiting transformed as Chromo Sapiens.
Höfuðstöðin, the venue, opened in 2022 in restored army barracks that previously served as bomb shelters during World War II and later as potato nurseries. It also houses a gift shop, café and bar with outdoor seating, and event spaces.
