Description
Þórsmörk, meaning 'Woods of Thor the Thundergod,' is a remote nature reserve where locals often go to escape the crowds. Access requires crossing several streams and glacial rivers, so specially modified vehicles are used for safety.
The tour begins with Seljalandsfoss waterfall, a 60-meter cascade that you can walk behind, conditions permitting. As the road becomes rougher, you enter untouched landscapes bordered by the glacier-covered Eyjafjallajökull volcano to the south.
You'll visit the former Gígjökull glacier lagoon, which disappeared after the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption caused flooding and debris flows. The exact itinerary inside Þórsmörk depends on weather and conditions, but typically includes short walks in canyons, woodlands, and caves.
