Visit the young lavafields of the Fagradalsfjall volcano with a geologist/volcanologist on this guided hike from Reykjavík. Uncover interesting geological features about the development of the eruption and the lava field. Be picked up in Reykjavik and drive through old lava fields as you travel to the eruption-side of the volcano. Begin with an overview of the volcanic history of Reyjanes peninsula and view the first signs of a new eruption at this place. Discover how the hot the lava field is forming new land. Let your guide show you how the composition of the lava influences the appearance of the rocks. Head up to the crater viewpoint to see panoramic views of the volcanic landscapes below. Return to Reykjavik with a drive through hot springs, lakes, and mountains in the Reykjanes peninsula. (Pick up and drop off depends on the booking option. PLEASE NOTICE: This hike doesn't go to the eruption side north of Grindavik, these area is not open hiking. The hike will be outside of any hazard zones or restricted areas. The last eruption at Fagradalsfjall ended in August 2023. Volcanic activity can change daily and the view on red glowing lava is not guaranteed. The tour can be cancelled with short noticed, because of bad weather conditions, road closures or dangerous volcanic activity.

  • The hike takes about 1-1.5 hours in each direction (2 to 3 hours in total) It's a difficult hike through rough terrain Hiking experience and good hiking gear is necessary for this excursion The tour can be canceled with short notice due to bad weather conditions or high levels of gas pollution from the volcano Because of gas pollution in the area, the hike is not recommended for children under 12 years, pregnant women, or people with lung diseases A volcanic eruption is a natural phenomenon, and the activity can change quickly. The view of hot glowing lava can not be guaranteed.
