Description
Embark on a thrilling adventure to the summit of Eyjafjallajökull, Iceland's legendary stratovolcano known for its dramatic 2010 eruption. Now dormant, Eyjafjallajökull offers hikers an unforgettable experience, with sweeping views from the summit and awe-inspiring landscapes along the way.
Meet your guide at the Seljavallalaug pool, where you’ll set out toward Eyjafjallajökull’s snowline. The initial climb through the foothills is steep but manageable, as you’ll keep a steady pace. At around 950 meters (3,116 feet) up, rope up for the glacier section of the ascent, tackling a total elevation gain of 1,600 meters (5,250 feet) over an 8-kilometer (5-mile) route to reach the top.
Reaching the summit is an incredible reward, with panoramic views over the 2010 eruption site and a spectacular outlook north to the Laugavegur trail and south to the Atlantic. On clear days, you can also see nearby glaciers like Mýrdalsjökull and Tindfjallajökull. The descent follows the same path, offering scenic views of the Atlantic and Vestmannaeyjar Islands on the way down.
