Description
Experience the thrill of driving a 4x4 buggy through Iceland’s most breathtaking landscapes! This epic tour takes you across tectonic plates, glacial rivers, lava fields, and historic sites, including the Golden Circle’s top attractions: Þingvellir, Gullfoss, and Geysir.
Starting the Adventure
We begin at Lambhagavegur 13 in Reykjavík, heading out on gravel tracks toward Hafravatn and Skammidalur, then crossing into Mosfellsdalur for a short break at Hraðastaðir. From there, we follow the Leirvogsá salmon river, passing Sámsstaðir, Stardalur, and Sauðafellsflói as we ascend into the Mosfellsheiði highlands.
The journey takes us through Stíflisdalur, Selkot, and Brúsastaðir, leading to Þingvellir National Park, where we’ll drive from the North American tectonic plate to the Eurasian plate—a truly unique experience!
Þingvellir – A UNESCO World Heritage Site
Þingvellir is one of Iceland’s most historic and scenic locations, set beside Þingvallavatn, the country’s largest lake. This site hosted Iceland’s first parliament, Alþingi, in 930 AD, where laws were made and disputes settled. The park spans 24,000 hectares, with 9,270 hectares designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its cultural and geological significance.
Leaving Þingvellir, we move into rugged highland terrain, following the Eyfirðingaleið trail toward Hlöðufell, with stunning glaciers Vestari Hagafellsjökull and Eystri Hagafellsjökull in sight. We pass Mosaskarð, Hagavatn, and Sandvatn, then arrive at Jarlhettur, a striking mountain range featured in the film Oblivion. From here, we follow the Hvítá River to the majestic Gullfoss waterfall.
Gullfoss – The Golden Waterfall
Gullfoss, fed by Langjökull glacier, is one of Iceland’s most famous natural wonders. Water cascades down a three-step staircase, then plunges 32 meters into a deep canyon, creating a powerful display of nature’s force. On sunny days, you may even spot a rainbow arching over the falls!
Continuing south, we enter Haukadalur geothermal valley, home to Iceland’s world-famous geysers.
Geysir – The Name that Started it All
The name “Geysir” originates from the Icelandic verb geysa, meaning “to gush.” The Great Geysir can shoot boiling water up to 60 meters into the air, though eruptions are rare. Nearby, Strokkur, Iceland’s most active geyser, erupts every few minutes, reaching heights of 35 meters—a spectacular sight! The area is filled with steaming hot springs and bubbling geothermal pools, making it one of Iceland’s most fascinating stops.
Heading Back
After Geysir, we travel through Lyngdalsheiði, following a scenic highland route past the abandoned Gjábakki farm before reconnecting with our original trail. We descend through Þingvellir, retracing our path back to Reykjavík—bringing our buggy adventure to an unforgettable close!
