Description
Epic Buggy Adventure Through Iceland’s Remote Highlands
Into the Wild – Departure from Hrauneyjar
Our journey begins at Hrauneyjar Highland Center, the gateway to Iceland’s highlands. We head east past Hrauneyjarlón, Bjallavað, Hnausapoll, and Frostastaðavatn, offering stunning views of volcanic plains and rugged trails before reaching our first major stop—Landmannalaugar.
This geothermal wonderland is famous for its steaming hot springs and colorful rhyolite mountains. Here, we take a well-earned break to soak in the views and enjoy the natural hot pools.
Eldgjá – The World’s Largest Volcanic Canyon
Leaving Landmannalaugar, we travel off the beaten path past Kýlingarvatn, Kirkjufell, and Réttarhnjúk, reaching Eldgjá—the largest volcanic fissure in the world, formed by a massive eruption in 934 AD. This four-year-long eruption reshaped the highlands, leaving behind a staggering landscape of deep volcanic rifts.
Glaciers, Volcanic Sands & Historic Huts
Continuing south, Mýrdalsjökull Glacier dominates the horizon. We cross the Syðri Ófæra river, a thrilling buggy challenge, before arriving at Álftavötn, home to an old mountain hut once used by sheep farmers. This serene oasis provides a glimpse into Iceland’s historical ties to the wilderness.
Mælifell – The Emerald Pyramid
From Álftavötn, we traverse the black volcanic sands of Mælifellssandur, reaching the striking green volcano, Mælifell. This cone-shaped wonder rises dramatically from the dark desert, creating an unreal, photogenic contrast against the glaciers.
Katla – The Sleeping Giant
Beneath Mýrdalsjökull lies Katla, one of Iceland’s most powerful and active volcanoes. With over 20 major eruptions recorded, it remains closely monitored, though dormant since 1918. Despite being 41 km from Eldgjá, it shares the same volcanic system, making this area geologically explosive.
The Final Stretch – A High-Speed Dash Through the Highlands
After Mælifell, we race westward over 14 km of black volcanic sands, crossing the Bláfjallakvísl glacial river for one last thrilling splash.
On the way back, we pass through Hvanngil, Álftavatn, Laufafell, Reykjadalir, Pokahryggir, and Dómadalur, each revealing a new shade of Iceland’s untamed beauty. Our journey ends as we loop back via Sigölduvegur Gamli, returning to Hrauneyjar Highland Center, completing an unforgettable highland adventure.
