Description
This small-group hiking tour covers approximately 8 km around one of Iceland’s most active volcanic areas, located 50 minutes from Reykjavík. The landscape is young and evolving, shaped by multiple eruptions since 2021 that created new lava fields and volcanic formations.
All guides are locals with firsthand eruption experience and extensive knowledge of the area. They share real stories about living near an active volcanic system and explain how the eruptions have altered the landscape and local communities.
The hike is moderate in difficulty, with an elevation gain of about 300 meters and a flexible pace adapted to the group. Walking poles are available if needed.
Tour Options
- Self-drive option: Meet your guide in Grindavík at 10:45. This requires a rental car, as taxis and shuttles are not suitable. Participants follow the guide’s car to the volcano parking area. Parking fees may apply.
- Pickup option: Includes return transfer from Reykjavík, a brief introduction to Grindavík, and the guided volcano hike. During summer or good weather, additional stops at Seltún geothermal area and Kleifarvatn Lake may be included, weather permitting.

Important Information
- Self-drive option requires a rental car; taxis and shuttles are not suitable. Follow the guide’s directions to the volcano parking area. After the hike, self-drive participants continue independently.
- Lava is visible only during eruptions. Routes adjust accordingly for safe viewing when possible.
- Only pickup tours include stops at Seltún and Kleifarvatn. These stops may be inaccessible during winter due to road closures caused by snow or ice.
- The tour combines two booking options: Pickup tours are limited to 7 guests; self-drive groups meet in Grindavík. Guided hikes may include up to 13 participants per guide depending on bookings.
