Description
Drive a 4x4 buggy through diverse landscapes including tectonic plates, glacial rivers, lava fields, and historic sites along Iceland’s Golden Circle.
The tour starts at Lambhagavegur 13 in Reykjavík. You will travel on gravel tracks toward Hafravatn and Skammidalur, cross into Mosfellsdalur for a short break at Hraðastaðir, then follow the Leirvogsá salmon river past Sámsstaðir, Stardalur, and Sauðafellsflói ascending into Mosfellsheiði highlands.
The route leads through Stíflisdalur, Selkot, and Brúsastaðir to Þingvellir National Park where you will drive across the boundary between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
Þingvellir - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Þingvellir is a historic site beside Þingvallavatn, Iceland’s largest lake. It hosted the country’s first parliament, Alþingi, in 930 AD. The park covers 24,000 hectares, with 9,270 hectares designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its cultural and geological significance.
From Þingvellir, the tour continues through rugged highlands via the Eyfirðingaleið trail toward Hlöðufell, with views of glaciers Vestari Hagafellsjökull and Eystri Hagafellsjökull. Passing Mosaskarð, Hagavatn, and Sandvatn, the route arrives at Jarlhettur mountain range, featured in the film Oblivion, then follows the Hvítá River to Gullfoss waterfall.
Gullfoss - The Golden Waterfall
Gullfoss, fed by Langjökull glacier, features water cascading down three steps before plunging 32 meters into a canyon. On sunny days, rainbows often form over the falls.
Next, the tour enters Haukadalur geothermal valley, home to Iceland’s famous geysers.
Geysir - The Name That Started It All
The Great Geysir can erupt water up to 60 meters, though eruptions are rare. Nearby Strokkur erupts every few minutes, shooting water 35 meters high. The area includes steaming hot springs and bubbling geothermal pools.
The return route heads through Lyngdalsheiði, passing the abandoned Gjábakki farm, back through Þingvellir, and returns to Reykjavík.
