Description

You step out of the lift into a bright kitchen on the top floor, with the city outside the windows and coffee already on. You put on an apron, and the chef walks you through today's menu: what you'll cook, where the ingredients come from, and why they matter in an Icelandic kitchen.

Then the cooking starts. Working in small teams, everyone takes a share of the three courses, all made from scratch. The starter is Arctic char, pan-fried in cast iron and served on an orange and fennel salad. The main is a rack of lamb on the bone with a red wine reduction, pea purée and red cabbage. Dessert is skyr with brown-cheese caramel and toasted oats. The lamb comes from sheep that roam free in the highlands all summer. Skyr is the thick cultured dairy Icelanders have made for centuries.

Halfway through, you stop for a tasting of traditional foods: homemade rye bread, Arctic char smoked over dried sheep dung the old way, and smoked lamb, with a glass of Icelandic beer. Your host explains where each one comes from and how it's still eaten today.

Back at the stove, you finish each course. The chef plates the first one to show you how, and then you plate your own. Each course goes straight to the table, where everyone sits down together, with a glass of wine alongside the starter and another with the main.

Whether you've cooked for years or struggle with boiling an egg, the instructions are clear and the pace is relaxed. Classes take up to 16 guests, with a host in the kitchen alongside your chef. We've been teaching for over a decade, and thousands of guests have cooked here. The recipes arrive by email after the class, so you can make the meal again at home.

Guests come as couples, as friends, as families and on their own. If you're travelling solo, you'll cook alongside others at the station and eat at a shared table, so you won't be dining alone. Many guests book on their first day in Reykjavik, to learn what to order for the rest of the trip, or on their last, to take a meal home with them.

The lunch class starts at 10:00 and finishes early in the afternoon, so the rest of your day is free for the city, the pools or the museums. It also makes a good plan for a day when the weather keeps you off the road. The dinner class starts at 17:00 and turns into your evening meal out.

The kitchen is in Þórunnartún, close to the seafront path and within walking distance of the city centre.
