West Iceland Canyon Baths and Waterfalls Tour from Reykjavik

This full-day tour from Reykjavik suits travelers interested in Icelandic nature, history, and geothermal baths. It visits waterfalls, horse farms, hot springs, and remote canyons in West Iceland.

Highlights

  • Relax in the secluded Husafell Canyon Baths
  • Visit waterfalls including Hraunfossar, Langifoss, and Barnafoss
  • Explore landscapes tied to Viking history
  • Tour the Sturlureykir Icelandic Horse Farm
  • Travel rugged mountain routes to two different canyons

Description

Starting in Reykjavik, the tour heads to Borgarnes, the gateway to West Iceland. The first stop is Deildartunguhver, Europe’s most powerful hot spring, which supplies hot water and energy to nearby communities.

Next, visit Sturlureykir Icelandic Horse Farm to meet friendly Icelandic horses. Guests can enjoy homemade rugbrauð (hot spring bread) with coffee or cold water while wandering among steam clouds.

Continue to Hraunfossar, the 'Lava Waterfalls.' View water streaming nearly a kilometer over lava fields from several platforms, fed by meltwater from the Langjokull glacier flowing into the Hvita river. Nearby, see Barnafoss, or “the waterfall of the children,” linked to a local legend.

Arrive at Husafell, a woodland area with historical turf houses and elf huts, artworks by local artists, and the famous “Lifting Stone of Husafell.”

From Husafell, travel to Deildargil Canyon to see Langifoss, a two-tiered waterfall off the usual tourist path.

The tour’s highlight is the Canyon Baths, a traditional Icelandic hot spring experience. Bathe in three geothermally-heated stone pools (30-41°C or 86-105°F), plus a cold pool and waterfall in Hringsgil canyon. The site limits visitors to 20 at a time, preserving a peaceful atmosphere reminiscent of early settlers’ bathing practices.

The final visit is Reykholt, once home to medieval historian Snorri Sturluson. Explore Snorralaug (Snorri’s Pool), a natural hot spring used since the 12th century.

The tour concludes with a return to Reykjavik after a day of exploration in West Iceland’s wilderness.
