Description
Spend a day in Snæfellsnes National Park, renowned for its varied scenery often called 'Iceland in Miniature.' Travel comfortably in a group limited to 19 participants for personalized attention.
Depart Reykjavik and view Snæfellsjökull volcano en route to the peninsula. Admire the highest peak in the area, visible from the capital on clear days. Visit Ytri-Tunga, a farm near a beach home to a seal colony where you can watch seals sunbathing and playing in the surf.
Explore Arnarstapi and Hellnar, coastal villages with striking rock formations covered in green and yellow moss. Take a walk along the cliffs to experience fresh sea air and scenic landscapes.
See the two black basalt columns of Lóndrangar, visible from the road, and visit Djúpalónssandur black beach. Listen to birds circling cliffs and waves hitting the shore.
Test your strength with the historic Djúpalónssandur lifting stones once used by fishermen. The stones vary in weight and are named as follows:
- 'Fullsterkur' (Full-Strength) - 154 kilograms (340 pounds)
- 'Hálfsterkur' (Half-Strength) - 100 kilograms (220 pounds)
- 'Hálfdrættingur' (Weakling) - 54 kilograms (119 pounds)
- 'Amlóði' (Useless) - 23 kilograms (50 pounds), lifting only this was considered shameful
You should lift the stones with your knees to avoid injury.
Next, visit Ingjaldshólskirkja, built in 1903 and situated on a hill between Hellissandur and Rif. Known as the Red Church, it offers broad views of the landscape and is linked to a local tradition that Christopher Columbus stayed nearby in the 1470s. Its simple design and peaceful setting make it a noteworthy stop.
End the tour at Kirkjufell Mountain, rising from green hills surrounded by rivers. This is a popular spot for photography; plan to capture your own photo of this iconic mountain.
