Description
The tour starts at Reykjavik’s cruise terminal and crosses the Hellisheiði plateau. Weather permitting, it includes a photo stop overlooking the south coast. The route continues past Hveragerði, Selfoss, Hella and Hvólsvöllur to Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can walk around and behind the cascade.
Next is Skógafoss waterfall, located below the Eyjafjallajökull volcano glacier. You can walk close to the base of this thunderous waterfall. Local legend says a treasure chest lies hidden behind it.
The tour then visits Sólheimajökull, a glacier tongue of Mýrdalsjökull. The ice there is interspersed with black ash from previous volcanic eruptions. A 10-minute walk from the parking area offers a good glacier view, with smaller icebergs floating in the lagoon below.
From there, the tour continues to Dyrhólaey, the southernmost point on mainland Iceland, rising 115 meters above sea level. During summer months, seabird species including puffins nest here. The natural rock arch gives the area its name. You can also see the black sand beach stretching toward Reynisfjara.
The final stop is Reynisfjara black sand beach. Here, you will see the Reynisdrangar basalt sea stacks, said in legend to be a petrified troll ship. The beach has distinctive basalt columns and a cave, but be cautious of powerful ‘sneaker’ waves. Always obey warning lights and signs on site.
The return journey includes a restroom stop at a rest area.
