Description
Step into the World of Icelandic Music at Harpa Concert Hall and discover how Iceland’s nature, history, and culture have shaped a musical identity with global reach. This multimedia exhibition combines a multilingual audio guide, specially composed music, archive recordings, visuals, and interactive features to trace the story of Icelandic music from the Viking Age to the present day. Begin your visit inside Harpa on Reykjavík’s waterfront, where the exhibition opens with the earliest chapters of Icelandic musical history. As you move through the experience, hear how settlement, isolation, natural forces, and cultural change influenced the sounds of the island. The audio guide adds context throughout, with music excerpts, original sound design, and visual material that help bring each period to life. Continue through stories of Iceland’s evolving music scene, from folk traditions and historical influences to popular culture and internationally known artists such as Björk, Sigur Rós, Of Monsters and Men, Laufey, KALEO, and Víkingur Ólafsson. Along the way, discover the rebellious spirit of Icelandic rock ’n’ roll and explore how a small island nation developed an outsized presence in contemporary music. The experience also includes hands-on moments, including the chance to try conducting the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. Designed as an indoor visit of around 35 to 50 minutes, the exhibition finishes back at street level inside Harpa, leaving you with a deeper understanding of Iceland’s rich and distinctive musical heritage.Includes
