Description
The western tip of Snæfellsnes peninsula features a newly designated national park including the Snæfellsjökull glacier and dramatic coastal cliffs and beaches. You will visit a viewpoint in the glacier’s foothills, made famous by Jules Verne’s novel Journey to the Center of the Earth.
Buðir, once a historic trading post, now hosts the Buðir Hotel where you can stop for coffee. The hotel is notable as a remote meeting place frequented by Icelandic and international visitors.
At Arnarstapi, a small village, enjoy views of the sea cliffs and consider taking a scenic 2.5-kilometer walk from Arnarstapi to Hellnar. Hellnar sits by the ocean beneath the glacier and is known for its seabirds and cliffs. During summer, there is an optional (not included) lunch stop at Fjöruhúsið Café, which offers warming shelter and ocean views with natural bird sounds.
Next, spend time on Djúpalónssandur beach collecting polished lava stones and pebbles along the shore. The tour finishes with a visit to Ólafsvík, a fishing village exposed to weather, before returning to your starting point.
