Description
Embark on a tour along the Golden Circle route, which will bring you to Iceland's most famous historical and natural attractions. Start the tour with pickup from Reykjavik and travel to the Nesjavellir geothermal area, one of the hottest spots in Iceland, located near the Hengill volcano. At Nesjavellir, find Iceland's second-largest geothermal power station, which serves the Reykjavik region with warming water. From Nesjavellir, head to the Thingvellir National Park and drive by the side of Thingvallavatn Lake, which offers spectacular landscape views. The Thingvellir National Park served as parliament ground for many centuries, from the time of early Viking settlers up to the 19th century. In the valley at Thingvellir, walk along the Almanagja fissure, the place where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates diverge and move apart. Then, drive to Haukadalur, the valley of geysers, where the Strokkur geyser erupts every 5-10 minutes into the air, spewing out a mixture of hot water and steam to a height up to 30 meters. Next, visit the Gullfoss Waterfall, which has cascades of 11 and 22 meters of powerful water streams falling into the gorge. From Gullfoss, visit the Friðheimar Greenhouse. The greenhouse is an excellent example of horticulture in Iceland. It is open for visitors, and you can come and enjoy a unique food experience at the restaurant, with tomatoes growing all around. After lunch, make a final stop for the day at Kerid Crater. This 55-meter-deep explosion crater filled with water creates a lake whose steep circular slopes resemble an ancient amphitheater. On the way back to Reykjavik, travel through the Hellisheidi mountain pass and finish with a drop-off at your accommodation.Includes
