Description
Explore the British and American occupation of Iceland on this private guided tour.
Visit ruins, fjords, gun emplacements, and more as your guide explains how this isolated and beautiful country helped change the outcome of World War 2.
Start with a slow-paced walk around the center of Reykjavik, led by your in-costume guide – an Entertainment Service Officer out here to entertain the troops – and you.
Using historical film and images, go back in time to understand why the Nazis were so obsessed with Iceland, why the British decided to invade, why the Americans followed, and what happened to Icelandic culture through the foreign influence.
Then drive to ruined fortifications over looking Reykjavik, before heading out to The War & Peace Museum, set on the banks of the stunning Hvalfjordur (Whale fjord), the most important harbor in the North Atlantic during WW2.
Afterwards, take in the incredible landscape as you view sites like the oldest still in use quonset huts (1942 American barracks), and the ruined bases of Hvammsvik and Hvitanes, before heading back to Reykjavik.
