Founded in 1973, Borgarnes golf club sits in the village of Borgarnes, located about an hour's drive from the capital. It began its life as a small piece of land donated by the local council. It became a nine-hole course in 1998 after a complete re-design by golf course architect Mr Hannes Thorsteinsson, and eventually claimed its full 18-hole status in 2007.
Being a fairly short and narrow course makes it highly difficulty, especially due to the water and numerous trees that are sprawled across it. It is acclaimed for its beauty, and is often regarded as one of the most picturesque courses in the country. Unlike any other golf course in Iceland, Borgarnes also houses a hotel and a guesthouse for the avid golfer on the ultimate golfing holiday. Its facilities include two practice greens, a driving range, restaurant, clubhouse, hotel and golf instruction.
