Aldeyjarfoss
Reykjavik
Situated on the Sprengisandur Highland road, the Aldeyjarfoss waterfall is within the boundaries of the Icelandic highlands. This means that it is really out of the way for most tourists. However if you can be bothered to make the extra effort then it really is worth your time for the views and photographs, which are both empty of other tourists due to the longer drive.
The waterfall drops a height of 20 metres, which is by far one of the smaller falls in Iceland, compared to some at 80 metres! However it is still a tranquil place to admire the moon-like landscapes and the natural beauty of the place. The falls are stemmed from the flow of the Skjalfandafljot river and with its lava fields and black stained basalt columns, the scene look almost apocalyptic.
To get to the falls take route 842 from the Akureyri ring road, if you pass Godafoss waterfall then you have gone past your turning. The last couple of kilometres are on an unmade road with a gate for private access, however a smaller car could manage this terrain. This is the correct way to approach the falls and the car park is to be found at the end of the road.
