Tjörnin - the Pond
Reykjavik
It's not the biggest lake in the country, but is certainly one of the best known.
Tjörnin (the Pond), can be found in the centre of the country's capital, Reykjavik. Surrounded by museums, parks, the Reykjavik city hall and University of Iceland buildings.
Enjoy the relaxing atmosphere by Tjörnin and watch the huge variety of birdlife that calls the lake home. It's a favourite place to bring children to feed the ducks, seagulls, swans and geese and other rare Nordic bird species.
When the lake freezes over in winter, hot geothermal waters are pumped in to defrost an area for the birds, while those who can brave the cold, keep warm from the romantic atmosphere and take to the ice on skates.
Originally a small river used to run from Tjörnin and out to sea, now it is a known as Lækjargata (Brook Street).
