If you are visiting the breathtakingly beautiful West Fjords by car, we highly recommend that you take the ferry Baldur instead, a reasonably priced option that will save you a lot of time. The ferry Baldur crosses Breidafjordur Bay between Stykkisholmur on the Snaefellsnes peninsula and Brjanslaekur in the north on a daily basis. Taking the ferry shortens the route between the south and mid-west of the country, and the whole West Fjords region in general. It's a quick, easy and enjoyable way to travel. The ride usually takes about three hours.
Sitting up on the deck on a warm summer day and enjoying the spectacular view could be a wonderful experience for those who don't suffer from seasickness. However, if you do have a tendancy to get seasick, you can have a seat in the movie theater, watch a film and forget all about where you are. If you are hungry you will find a modest little restaurant inside Baldur where you can purchase food and light refreshments. Who wouldn't want to eat at a floating restaurant?
Baldur is also the only way to get to Flatey, a magnificently beautiful and tranquil island in the west. It's a popular destination for many visitors during the summer, so it is ideal to take the morning ferry from Stykkisholumar and return in the evening or continue on to Brjanslaekur if you're just there for a quick visit. Some people choose to stay overnight at the wonderful Hotel Flatey.
Seatours offers fantastic family discounts during the summer, letting children 0-15 years go for free and giving youths 16-20 years old a 50% discount. If you book online you get an additional 10% discount. You must book in advance for cars and tickets have to be picked up at the Seatours office at least 30 minutes before departure.
