Kaffihús Vesturbæjar was recommended to us by the lovely Ruri, who helped us at the Reykjavík Museum of Photography—and what a great recommendation it was. Located just outside the main city center, it has a relaxed, local atmosphere that immediately made the experience feel more authentic. I was especially amused that there are two designated sections: one where laptops are welcome and one where they are not. The soundtrack was also incredible and added so much to the overall vibe. Now, the food: phenomenal. I ordered the mussels with fries, and my niece had the ribeye steak frites. In all seriousness, these may have been the best mussels I have ever had—and I have traveled and eaten my fair share. They were prepared in the most delicious garlic butter, which was truly to die for. The steak was also beautifully prepared, and the portions and quality were extremely reasonable for the price. A comparable meal in the city center could easily cost twice as much, if not more. The waitress who initially took our order was lovely, but the service became very limited after the food arrived. The restaurant was not particularly busy—perhaps five occupied tables out of around twenty—yet no one returned to check on us, offer coffee, or bring the bill. I eventually had to walk up to the counter to pay. The staff seemed more focused on chatting among themselves, which was a little disappointing because the setting and food were otherwise so wonderful. That said, everyone was pleasant, and I am sure it was simply part of the very relaxed, neighborhood atmosphere. Go for the phenomenal food, the great music, the local vibe, and the excellent value. Bring a little patience, settle in, and simply enjoy the experience. This can also be tightened into a shorter, punchier Google review.

We had coffee here. It's a nice, cozy atmosphere with many plants and wood decor, and they have an old card catalog we repurposed as a water and refreshment table. We didn't have any food, but the salad looked good.

Had dinner here and the food was great! Casual setting and order at the counter.
