Kolaportid
Reykjavik
An excellent spot to find reasonably priced Icelandic woollen goods.
You need something? An antique lamp? A new vegetable knife? Want to sample dried fish and fermented shark? Purchase a bag of Icelandic candy? Find a new dress for Saturday night? Whatever it is, you can find what you're looking for at Kolaportið, Iceland's only flea market. Kolaportid is an indoor flea market, open during the weekend between 11:00am-5:00pm and occasionally on public holidays. It's located in an old industrial building by the Reykjavik harbour, between the famous Bæjarins Beztu hot dog stand and the Old Harbour.
The atmosphere at Kolaportid flea market is very unique, it is a place where people of all ages gather on Saturdays and Sundays to hunt for books or antiques, grocery shop at the food court, sell their old garments to new appreciative owners for reasonable prices and dig through piles of stuff to find hidden treasures. It's a real scavenger hunt. We recommend bringing cash, as the majority of stalls are unable to accept cards of any kind. There is an ATM by one of the entrances though, and a cafeteria in case you get hungry.
One man's trash is another man's treasure, so we urge you to get an early start when the weekend comes'a'knockin', and fill your bags with thrifted clothes, artifacts, Icelandic delicacies, music, toys or whatever you can find at Kolaportid. It's a warm, charming and unpretentious place, and no one should have to go out empty handed.
