Eldborg
Reykjavik
Eldborg(Fire-City) is a large volcanic crater, which has created a truly magnificent and unique mark on the landscape of the western part of Iceland. Borganes is the nearest residential town, Eldborg is located 38km north from that area along the Snaefellnes peninsula. Both Borgarnes and Eldborg are within easy driving distance of Reykjavík city.
The crater rises 60 metres above the surrounding lava and can be seen from miles around. The cone of the crater itself is 200 metres across and 50 metres in depth, making it the largest crater in this volcanic rift. Having erupted approximately 5000 years ago, it is now dormant. It is also mentioned in the Medieval chronicles as having erupted during that era!
It is best to approach the site from the Southern side, access can only be gained by hiking across the lava field, and it is possible to climb the crater when you get there. It is a magnificent site, not just for those interested in the geography or volcanologists, but for everyone. It definitely makes for a great photograph.
