Visit the most famous sight in all of Iceland, the beautiful Gullfoss. This stunning waterfall is not only extremely well-known, but is also one of the most popular attractions in the country. Translated into English, the name Gullfoss means 'Golden Falls' and on lovely, sunny days the renowned waterfall can look golden. What's more, some days you can even see rainbows appear in the mist clouds from the striking falls!
It is said that the gorgeous tourist site was once almost destroyed when investors wanted to build a hydroelectric power plant here. However, the daughter of the owner, Sigridur Tomasdottir, protested to such an extent, threatening suicide, that the waterfall was saved and kept unaffected. Nowadays, you can see a memorial to Sigridur Tomasdottir at the top of the falls.
