Vatnajökull
Reykjavik
At Vatnajokull, Iceland's National Park, visitors can enjoy a unique experience of an enormously varied landscape. Established in 2008, Vatnajokull is ranked as Europe's largest National Park, covering 13% of Iceland and covering many of the country's national parks which previously existed elsewhere.
Sitting in the Icelandic highlands, the park encompasses an enormous glacier plus many other expansive surrounding areas. As well as glacial ice, the huge amount of wide-ranging scenery here includes features such as volcanic activity, river forces, a canyon, a mighty waterfall, horse-shaped cliffs, broad wetlands, crater plugs and geothermal activity.
Besides the beautiful landscapes, the National Park also contains lots of different hiking options. Walks for both the super keen and more relaxed walkers are available with the trails varying in length and ease.
Moreover, Vatnajokull provides plenty of camping area, education facilities and visitor centres which are full of services on the park and its protected surroundings.
