Reykjavik Art Museum Kjarvalsstadir
Reykjavik
Kjarvalsstaðir was the first building in Iceland specifically designed for visual art exhibitions.
Kjarvalsstaðir is named after the painter Jóhannes S. Kjarval (1885-1972), one of Iceland's most influential and recognized artists. The most comprehensive collection of Kjarval's works is on permanent display here, highlighting his range of styles, his use of the local nature and mythology. The exhibitions at Kjarvalsstaðir focus primarily on paintings and sculptures of the established masters of modern art. The museum also hosts year-round concerts of various styles by musicians from both Iceland and abroad. One can take in the view onto the beautiful Klambratún/Miklatún Park while enjoying a drink or a snack at the museum's newly renovated café. There is also a design-and-book store in the main lobby and a lovely family-activity space.
