I like Iceland’s stunning landscapes as much as the next guy but sitting on a bus and watching it glide by the window, blending together to form one homogenous mass of lava, waterfalls and endless stretches of road, isn’t my idea of a good time. Luckily, there are a few tours in Iceland that offer the chance to see the Iceland’s nature up close, as well as a hefty dose of adrenaline. Here are some of my favourites!
Snowmobiling on a Glacier
Snowmobiling on a glacier is not something that is available to everyone in the world. Lucky for us, in Iceland, it’s available all year round! You can go snowmobiling on the second largest glacier in Iceland, Langjökull, any day of the week, multiple times a day, so the excuse of not having time is not valid. The drive up there is only about 2 hours or so and the scenery on the way is not bad, not bad at all. You will be driving through the stunning Þingvellir National Park, past Geysir, erupting jets of steaming water in the air every ten minutes or so, and Gullfoss waterfall.
How cool is it to have experienced snowmobiling on a glacier? The answer is very, very cool. The thrill of putting on a woolly bear suit and jumping on a mean ass snowmobile and roaring the engine is insane. To me, it does not get better than that. It is kind of hard to describe the feeling of driving up and down the slopes of a glacier. The feeling of the wind blowing through the air holes of your helmet while driving at around 80 km/h and seeing nothing but ice all around you feels unique.View Tours

Riding ATV’s over Iceland’s Beaches and Deserts
ATV tours can be done in a couple of places around Iceland such as the Reykjanes peninsula, suburbs of Reykjavík City and on the black sand beaches of the south coast. All of these tours differ from each other. On Reykjanes you have a very rugged landscape with mountains/volcanoes and lava fields. The suburbs of Reykjavík offer a blend of backcountry roads, mountains, rivers and vegetation. The south coast offers black sand beaches, black sand dunes, and the oncoming tide. You might wonder, hey Fannar, which one did you like the most?

Riding a River Jet Boat
The river jet boat is basically an overpowered jet boat that speeds up and down the glacier river, Hvítá, making 360 degree turns at an intense speed. Doesn’t sound too bad, does it? The 40-minute ride guarantees an adrenaline rush for both young and old. If you have any issue with your back I cannot recommend this because there is a lot of twisting, turning and bouncing on this ride. The ride is, however, believe it or not, very safe. The boats are checked and maintained every day and the crazy Norwegian driving the boat is considered one of the best in the world at what he does. Not only is this tour thrilling but the scenery on the milky white glacial river is amazing.
